This is going a very similar way to the nuclear arms race.

The release of ChatGPT was the equivalent of the ‘Trinity test’. Think ‘Oppenheimer’ – but a display of the true power of ai that kickstarted a new generation of ai’s.

And right now we are witnessing the equivalent of the 1950’s bomb tests. Each new ai release is a display of the latest innovation and technical achievement of the country it is released by.

Essentially we now need something similar to the ‘International atomic energy agency’ but for the international oversight of ai.

Will there be some coordinated attacks to display the potential of ai as a weapon? Think, small scale cyberattacks.

Will a Cuban missile crisis type event lead us to a similar limited test ban as in the 60’s? Something like an announcement of $500b to be spent on advancing ai maybe? Or maybe the undermining of such spending, by releasing a powerful ai as open source… ahem… deepseek.

Will we eventually see a treaty regarding use of ai in military application? Or maybe a data sharing plan and creation of an early warning notification system to reduce the risk of an inadvertent full military handover to ai…?

The risks with this arms race outweigh even the risks of the nuclear arms race though. As we could reach a point where humans relinquish full control to ai and even if we wanted to stop all out war… we may not be able to.
