Where are the protests?

AI is the biggest existential threat facing humanity, and we are building it ourselves. That’s not a doomer’s nightmare. It is the blunt reality. Experts without financial incentives (bengio, hinton, countless others) are warning about this. https://youtu.be/qe9QSCF-d88 I see a lot of “but it’s just cool new technology” going around. So all of these experts are wrong? Besides you can see yourself that if AI can cure cancer it can also create an incurable pandemic. The whole point of ASI is that it can outthink us by orders of magnitude. Either the system itself or the intel it produces can be used to wipe out humanity effortlessly. Yet I see a lot of people hinging our future on the mere guess that it will be friendly. What AI companies are doing is so irresponsible it’s hard to find an analogous event in history as bad as this. So where are the protests? People protest climate change, arguably a much smaller threat to the continued existence of the human species. People protest all sorts of things that are pretty minor compared to the potential for utter catastrophe we are facing. I suppose AI is just too abstract, it will take massive job replacement and humanoid adoption for the masses to take notice.
